EQUIPMENT/TOOLS

For the Spring/Summer Fashion Season TREND wanted their artist to go OUT OF BOUNDS.

APPROACH

The way I approached the theme OUT OF BOUNDS was to create something new and indescribable, something that would make the audience uneasy because of their inability to label it. I wanted to take the challenge of OUT OF BOUNDS both in the process and in the product of making the project.

CONCEPT

Due to the goal of making something you couldn’t label, I did not want to use any reference material to help in the creation of visuals. I was inspired by the design philosophies of fashion designer Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto in their boundary pushing work, challenging the limits of the human figure.

I wanted to express this through the models contorted and unnatural poses.

CHALLENGES

Its hard to describe something that is meant to be indescribable. There were some challenges in conveying ideas to my team but I was lucky to have been paired with an amazing stylist that had the same goals in mind for the project. I pushed myself to learn new things on this project, the short time frame and the quick learning curve to overcome was a challenge I placed on myself and something I enjoyed working around.

EXECUTION

As I said, I wanted to take the OUT OF BOUNDS theme both in the process and in the product of creating the project. I shoot exclusively analog photography, through the process I wanted to shoot the film pushed two stops, a process that I have not experimented with before. I also wanted to shoot at a focal length that I have not done before prior, that being a wide angle 28mm lens. Lastly, I explored the process of scanning my film strips on my own, something I have not tried before with my previous works.
