EQUIPMENT/TOOLS

For the Spring/Summer Fashion Season TREND wanted their artist to go OUT OF BOUNDS.

APPROACH

This photo-series was created to be paired with one of the writing pieces created by one of TRENDS staff writers. The piece shares the same name as the photo-series and talked about themes of loss, multicultural identity, and self reflection.

CONCEPT

I wanted to make sure I payed respects to the writing because of how personal it was to the writer. For this piece I wanted to capture feelings of loss, grief and reflection. The idea was for the models to play with the idea of looking into a mirror and as the photos continue to progress they would slowly meld into one another in embrace. Breaking the extra-dimensional border that the “mirror” creates thus successfully going OUT OF BOUNDS.

CHALLENGES

Two main challenges that I encountered for this photoshoot was its organization and some unavoidable equipment issues. Life happens and scheduling can be difficult. We are all students so it can be hard to navigate time for schoolwork and creative work. The organization was slightly rushed because of the need to meet the deadline but we persevered and grew!

EXECUTION

I shoot exclusively analog photography. This would be my first time set designing for my own shoot since I usually like to do outdoors and location scout. We used the writers apartment to make the photos feel more intimate and personal to their work. An idea I had to further push the narrative of being OUT OF BOUNDS and to highlight the writing even further was to use tattoo stencil paper to “tattoo” the writing onto the models. The writing was done in two languages, English and Indonesian so we had one model covered in the English writing and another in the Indonesian writing. At their hands the writings would intersect and continue in the other language. (Check the close up down below :D)
